Catering & Hospitality students enjoyed an exceptional training experience at The Lexington Bar, located within DoubleTree by Hilton Hull, this week.
The session was led by Bar Manager, James Lennon and Mixologist, Simeon Brons, providing students with hands-on industry insights and practical skills.
During the session, the students engaged in an array of training activities that honed essential service skills. They discussed mixology techniques and learned about the variety of glassware suited for different beverages. The students also practiced tray service, carefully balancing trays laden with glasses, and refined their table service skills by serving drinks with professionalism and precision.
The training covered various types of service styles, including banquet and formal dining, as well as essential beverage service, with an emphasis on wine and spirits. The experience was especially timely as the students prepare for two launch events at Bilocca, Hull College’s on-site training restaurant, set to take place next week.
Prior to the training, the students were also treated to a tour of the hotel’s facilities, offering them a comprehensive look at the hospitality experience guests receive at the city centre hotel.
Reflecting on the experience, Level 2 Culinary Arts student Tallulah Jones said: “It was amazing! The session provided a real insight into the industry that we want to go on and enjoy careers in, so the whole experience was both worthwhile and enjoyable. It came at the perfect time with the upcoming events set to take place at Bilocca, and everything we learnt and practiced will be so beneficial for those two nights.”
James Lennon added: “It was a fantastic session, and the students were a real pleasure to work with throughout the afternoon. Their engagement, attitude, and commitment were spot on - and they didn’t laugh at me too much, either! Honestly, I had a great time myself; it was fun to shake off some cobwebs! This experience was fantastic for them all, and one that I wish I could’ve had when I was younger!”
With real-world training like this, Hull College continues to provide students with invaluable opportunities to develop the skills they need for success in the hospitality industry.
