Observed on 10th October every year, World Mental Health Day aims to raise awareness of mental health issues, challenge and remove the stigma and barriers associated with mental health around the world, and mobilise efforts in support of mental health.
Mental health is everyone’s business. Mental health conditions can have a substantial effect on all areas of life, such as school or work performance, relationships with family and friends and ability to participate in the community.
Some people call mental health ‘emotional health’ or ‘well-being’ and it’s just as important as good physical health. When we feel mentally well, we can work productively, enjoy our free time, and contribute actively to our communities.
World Mental Health Day is about more than advocacy though. It also provides an opportunity to empower people to look after their own mental health and provide support to others.
The theme of 2022's World Mental Health Day, set by the World Federation for Mental Health, is ‘Mental health is a universal human right’.
