Students and staff from Hull College hosted a fund-raising Macmillan Coffee Morning last week, serving up a delicious selection of freshly made cakes, biscuits, teas and coffees.
The Macmillan Coffee Morning is an annual tradition that unites people across the UK in support of the Macmillan Cancer Support charity. This year, Hull College's Beauty Therapy and Nail Enhancements students, supported by tutors Amanda Reeve and Emma Wray, took charge of the event, offering a mouth-watering selection of freshly made cakes, biscuits, teas, and coffees.
In addition, the event also featured an exciting twist with glitter tattoos offered by Beauty students, adding a touch of sparkle to the day.
In total, the Coffee Morning raised an impressive £339.69, all of which will be donated to Macmillan Cancer Support to aid their vital work in providing care, support, and information to those affected by cancer.
The event also served as a valuable learning opportunity for all students involved, enabling them to work on and develop crucial life skills such as team-working, organisational and communication skills whilst providing a great opportunity to put them into practice.
Assistant Head of The Institute of Hospitality and Lifestyle, Kerry Wray - who co-ordinated the event alongside the students - said: “We were absolutely thrilled with the success of our Macmillan Coffee Morning. The whole event showcased the incredible spirit, unity and generosity in place at Hull College and we are immensely proud of our students for their dedication and hard work in organising and executing this event. Not only did we raise an impressive sum for Macmillan Cancer Support, but our students had the chance to put their newly acquired skills into practice.
“It was heart-warming to see the entire college community come together to support such a vital cause. Cancer unfortunately affects most families in one way or another. We wanted to do our bit by taking part in this huge event, raising funds and awareness of the fantastic work done by all at Macmillan Cancer Support.”
The Coffee Morning is Macmillan’s biggest fundraising event each year. The first-ever Coffee Morning happened way back in 1990. It was a rather small affair with a simple idea: guests would gather over coffee and donate the cost of their cuppa to Macmillan in the process.
However, it was so successful that they did it again the following year - only this time nationally. Since then, Coffee Morning has raised over £290 million for Macmillan, with more than £12 million raised across the UK in 2022.
